Light Brigade
Crimean War chargers
The Light Brigade was a British cavalry unit that made a disastrous charge against Russian forces during the Crimean War in 1854.
Miscommunicated orders sent them directly into enemy artillery at the Battle of Balaclava, resulting in heavy casualties.
Tennyson's poem "The Charge of the Light Brigade" immortalized the event, making it a byword for brave but futile military action: It was a Light Brigade moment—heroic and doomed.
