Cartesian coordinates

Ordered axis pairs

Cartesian coordinates identify a point's position in space using perpendicular axes.

In two dimensions, a point is located by its horizontal distance (x) and vertical distance (y) from an origin: The point (3, 5) lies three units right and five units up.

Three-dimensional coordinates add a z-axis for depth.

Named for René Descartes, who unified algebra and geometry by representing geometric shapes as equations.
