Barbarossa

Holy Roman ruler

Barbarossa means "red beard" in Italian, most famously attached to two historical figures.

Frederick I, Holy Roman Emperor in the 12th century, was called Frederick Barbarossa for his distinctive facial hair.

Operation Barbarossa was Nazi Germany's 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union—the largest military operation in history, named for the emperor.

The word now primarily evokes the WWII campaign: The failure of Barbarossa marked the beginning of Germany's defeat.
