German unification
Prussia absorbs neighbors
German unification refers to the political process by which East Germany and West Germany merged into a single nation-state on October 3, 1990, following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
The term may also refer to the earlier 19th-century consolidation of German-speaking states into the German Empire under Prussian leadership in 1871.
Context usually makes clear which unification is meant, though the 1990 event is often called German reunification to distinguish it.
