jacquard

Intricate loom fabric

Jacquard refers to a type of fabric with an intricate woven pattern, or the loom mechanism that produces it.

The distinctive feature is that complex designs—florals, geometrics, damasks—are woven into the fabric rather than printed on it: jacquard upholstery, a jacquard tie.

The term comes from Joseph Marie Jacquard, who invented the programmable loom in the early 1800s. (Capitalized Jacquard refers to the inventor.)
