motifs
Repeated design elements
Motifs are recurring elements in art, literature, music, or design—patterns, images, or themes that appear repeatedly to create unity or reinforce meaning.
A novel might use water imagery as a motif; a symphony might return to a four-note motif.
In decorative arts, motifs are distinctive design elements: floral motifs, geometric motifs.
The word comes from French, sharing roots with motive—both suggest something that drives or shapes a work.
