fetters
Chains for ankles
Fetters are shackles or chains fastened around the ankles to restrain a prisoner.
The word appears most often in figurative use, where fetters are any constraints on freedom: the fetters of tradition, throwing off the fetters of oppression.
To fetter someone is to restrain them, literally or figuratively: fettered by debt, fettered by outdated regulations.
