yoking

Hitching beasts together

Yoking is joining two things together, from the wooden frame that harnesses draft animals to work in pairs.

The word extends to any coupling or binding: yoking tradition with innovation, yoking disparate ideas into a single argument.

In rhetoric, yoking (or zeugma) links one word to two others in different senses: "She lowered her standards and her neckline."
