couple

Two together romantically

A couple is two of something, especially two people in a romantic relationship: a married couple, the couple next door.

As a quantifier, a couple of means approximately two, though it often stretches to mean a few: I'll be ready in a couple of minutes.

In informal speech, the "of" frequently drops: a couple beers.

To couple is to join or connect: The train cars were coupled together.
