teletype

Distant typing machine

A teletype is an electromechanical device that sends and receives typed messages over telegraph or telephone lines—essentially a typewriter connected to a communication network.

Teletypes dominated business and news communication through much of the 20th century before computers replaced them.

The word persists in computing: a TTY terminal emulates the teletype interface, and teletype-style output means text appearing character by character.
