wheel well

Arch above tire

A wheel well is the recessed space in a vehicle's body that houses a wheel and allows it to move up and down with the suspension.

In cars, the wheel wells are the curved cavities above the tires; in aircraft, they're the compartments where landing gear retracts.

Stowaways occasionally hide in airplane wheel wells, usually with fatal results.
