slipstream
Drafter's invisible highway
A slipstream is the area of reduced air pressure behind a moving vehicle or object, where following closely requires less effort.
Cyclists and race car drivers draft in a competitor's slipstream to conserve energy before overtaking.
The verb means to follow in this zone: She slipstreamed the lead car until the final lap.
Figuratively, to ride in someone's slipstream is to benefit from their trailblazing effort.
