fixed gear
Direct-drive bike setup
A fixed gear is a bicycle drivetrain where the rear cog is locked directly to the hub—if the wheel turns, the pedals turn.
Unlike freewheel bikes, you can't coast; your legs move constantly.
Often shortened to fixie.
Popular with bike messengers and urban cyclists for simplicity and control: She rides a fixed gear through downtown.
