wainscoting
Lower wall covering
Wainscoting is wooden paneling that covers the lower portion of an interior wall, typically rising three to four feet from the floor.
It serves both decorative and protective purposes, shielding walls from scuffs and furniture damage.
The panels may be simple flat boards or more elaborate raised designs: The dining room featured dark oak wainscoting.
Also spelled wainscotting.
