skirting

Evading the issue

Skirting is material that runs along the base of something—most commonly the baseboard where a wall meets the floor, called skirting board in British English.

The word also names fabric gathered around furniture legs or the bottom edge of a garment.

As a verb form, skirting means going around the edge of something or avoiding it: skirting the issue, skirting the lake on our morning walk.
