baseboard

Floor-level wall trim

A baseboard is the narrow strip of molding running along the bottom of an interior wall where it meets the floor.

It covers the joint, protects the wall from scuffs and furniture, and provides a finished look: The painters taped off the baseboards.

Called skirting board in British English.
