tenoning

Cutting wood joints

Tenoning is the process of cutting a tenon—a projecting piece of wood shaped to fit into a corresponding hole (mortise) in another piece.

The mortise-and-tenon joint is among the oldest and strongest methods of joining wood.

Tenoning can be done by hand with a saw and chisel or with a dedicated tenoning machine: The cabinetmaker spent the morning tenoning rails for the table base.
