gusts

Brief air bursts

Gusts are sudden, brief rushes of wind stronger than the prevailing breeze: Gusts of up to fifty miles per hour knocked down power lines.

The word extends to any sudden outburst: a gust of laughter, a gust of emotion.

As a verb, wind gusts when it blows in bursts rather than steadily.
