windsock

Airfield direction cone

A windsock is a cone-shaped fabric tube mounted on a pole, open at both ends, used to show wind direction and approximate speed.

The wider end catches the wind, causing the sock to extend horizontally when winds are strong.

Windsocks appear at airports, heliports, and chemical plants—anywhere wind information matters for safety.
