trams

Urban rail vehicles

Trams are rail vehicles that run on tracks through city streets, powered by overhead electric lines.

Called streetcars in American English, trams were common urban transport before buses and cars dominated.

Some cities have preserved or revived tram systems: The tram rattled past the old quarter.

In British usage, a tram can also be a cable car or aerial gondola.
