mules
Backless shoes, sometimes
Mules are the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse—sterile hybrids prized for their endurance and sure-footedness.
The word extends to other hybrids and to stubborn people: stubborn as a mule.
A mule is also a backless slipper or shoe.
In drug slang, a mule is someone who smuggles contraband, especially by carrying it on or inside their body: The cartel used mules to move cocaine across the border.
