trammels
Restraints on movement
Trammels are things that restrict or confine movement or freedom.
The word appears most often in the plural and in figurative contexts: free from the trammels of convention, escape the trammels of bureaucracy.
The singular trammel originally meant a net for catching fish or birds, and later various mechanical devices that constrain motion.
To trammel is to restrict or hamper: trammeled by regulations.
