streetcar

Urban rail vehicle

A streetcar is a public transit vehicle that runs on rails embedded in city streets, powered by overhead electric cables.

Common in American cities from the late 1800s through mid-1900s, most were replaced by buses, though some cities have preserved or restored streetcar lines.

Also called a trolley or, in British English, a tram.
