metro

Underground city transit

Metro typically refers to a metropolitan subway or underground rail system: I took the metro to work.

It also functions as an adjective meaning metropolitan—relating to a large city and its surrounding areas: the metro area, metro Atlanta.

In informal use, metro once described men with refined, urban tastes in grooming and fashion, short for metrosexual. (Capitalized Metro may be a proper name for specific transit systems.)
