tintypes

Victorian portrait plates

Tintypes are photographs made on thin iron plates coated with dark lacquer or enamel—not actually tin.

Popular from the 1860s through early 1900s, they were cheap, durable, and produced quickly at fairs and studios.

The phrase not on your tintype was slang for "absolutely not," now archaic.

She found a tintype of her great-grandmother in the attic.
