Ark of the Covenant

Tablets' golden vessel

The Ark of the Covenant is the sacred chest described in the Hebrew Bible, built to hold the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments.

According to Exodus, God gave Moses precise instructions for its construction: acacia wood overlaid with gold, topped by two golden cherubim.

The Ark represented God's presence among the Israelites and was carried before them in battle and housed in the Temple's innermost chamber.

Its fate after the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem remains unknown, spawning centuries of speculation and treasure-hunting narratives: Raiders of the Lost Ark.
