baldachin

Ornate overhead covering

A baldachin is an ornamental canopy of fabric or stone, typically placed over an altar, throne, or tomb.

The most famous example covers the high altar of St.

Peter's Basilica in Rome.

The word also applies to portable canopies carried in religious processions: The priest walked beneath a silk baldachin.

Also spelled baldaquin.
