consecrated ground
Blessed burial site
Consecrated ground is land that has been formally blessed or dedicated for religious purposes, especially a cemetery or churchyard where the faithful may be buried.
Historically, burial in consecrated ground was denied to suicides, the unbaptized, or those outside the faith: The priest refused to bury the gambler in consecrated ground.
The phrase sometimes appears figuratively for any space considered sacred or inviolable.
