hell

Place of damnation

Hell is the place of eternal punishment in many religious traditions, where the wicked suffer after death: The sermon described the torments of hell.

By extension, hell describes any place or situation of misery: War is hell.

The commute was hell today.

As an exclamation, hell expresses surprise, frustration, or emphasis: What the hell is going on?

Hell, I don't care.

Common expressions include all hell broke loose (chaos erupted), hell to pay (serious consequences), when hell freezes over (never), a snowball's chance in hell (no chance at all), and go to hell (a curse or dismissal).
