drink offering

Liquid ritual gift

A drink offering is a religious ritual in which liquid—usually wine, but sometimes water, milk, or oil—is poured out as a sacrifice to a deity.

Common in ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern religions, including Judaism, where it accompanied animal sacrifices at the temple.

The practice appears throughout the Hebrew Bible and persists in various forms across cultures.

Paul uses the image metaphorically: I am already being poured out like a drink offering.
