swivel gun

Pivoting ship weapon

A swivel gun is a small cannon mounted on a pivot or rotating base, allowing it to be aimed in multiple directions without repositioning the entire weapon.

These were commonly used on ships, fortifications, and small boats from the 16th through 19th centuries, where their flexibility made them effective for close-range defense against boarding parties or small craft.

The swivel mount let a single gunner quickly track moving targets.
