railroad gun
Track-mounted cannon
A railroad gun is an extremely large artillery piece mounted on and transported by railway cars, allowing heavy firepower to be moved along existing rail lines.
These weapons reached their peak use during the World Wars, when their massive size made conventional transport impossible.
The railway mounting solved the mobility problem while providing a stable platform for firing.
The Germans deployed railroad guns to bombard Paris from nearly 75 miles away.
