suppressor
Quiets the report
A suppressor is a device that reduces or eliminates something unwanted.
Most commonly, it's a cylindrical attachment for a firearm that muffles the sound of discharge: The assassin screwed a suppressor onto the pistol.
In electronics, suppressors reduce electrical noise or interference.
In genetics, a suppressor gene inhibits the expression of another gene.
The term is preferred over "silencer" in technical firearms contexts, since no device eliminates gunshot sound entirely.
