snubber

Energy absorption device

A snubber is a device that dampens or absorbs sudden forces.

In mechanical systems, snubbers cushion shock loads or limit movement—protecting equipment from jarring impacts.

In electrical circuits, snubbers suppress voltage spikes that could damage components.

The word comes from snub in its sense of checking motion abruptly: The hydraulic snubber prevented the pipe from swinging during the earthquake.
