inhibitor

Reaction slowing agent

An inhibitor is something that slows, blocks, or prevents a process or reaction.

The term appears most often in scientific contexts: enzyme inhibitors block biochemical reactions, corrosion inhibitors protect metal surfaces, and ACE inhibitors lower blood pressure.

More broadly, anything that restrains or suppresses can be called an inhibitor: Fear is a powerful inhibitor of creative thinking.
