defense mechanism
Psychological self-protection
A defense mechanism is an unconscious mental process that protects against anxiety or emotional pain.
In psychoanalytic theory, these include repression, denial, projection, and rationalization—ways the mind shields itself from uncomfortable truths.
The term extends beyond psychology: Humor is my defense mechanism when things get awkward.
Any automatic protective response qualifies: The lizard's camouflage is a defense mechanism against predators.
