subpixel

Screen color component

A subpixel is one of the colored components—typically red, green, and blue—that together form a single pixel on a display screen.

Because subpixels can be addressed individually, rendering techniques exploit them to create the illusion of finer detail than the pixel grid would otherwise allow: subpixel rendering makes text look smoother on LCD screens.
