moire

Shimmery fabric pattern

Moire is a wavy, rippled pattern that appears when two regular patterns overlap at slight angles—like the shimmering effect on watered silk or the visual interference when photographing a striped shirt through a screen door.

The term applies to fabrics with this deliberately created texture and to the unintended visual artifacts in photography and digital imaging: The scan showed distracting moire patterns.
