Pixelizing is making an image appear as a grid of visible square blocks, either by extreme enlargement or deliberate reduction in resolution.
News programs pixelize faces to protect identities; censors pixelize body parts.
The effect can be aesthetic choice or technical limitation: The old photo was so pixelized you couldn't make out the faces.
