Pixelated describes an image where individual pixels are visible, creating a blocky, low-resolution appearance.
This happens when an image is enlarged beyond its native resolution or compressed too aggressively: The photo was so pixelated you couldn't make out their faces.
Pixelation is sometimes applied deliberately to obscure identity or nudity in video.
The word derives from pixel, the smallest unit of a digital image.
