stockcar

Modified production vehicle

A stockcar is a racing automobile that appears outwardly similar to standard production vehicles but is heavily modified for competition.

Stock car racing, particularly NASCAR in the United States, features these cars on oval tracks: The stockcar slammed into the wall on turn three.

The "stock" originally meant unmodified, though modern stockcars share little with showroom models beyond basic body shape.

Also spelled as two words: stock car.
