slingshot
Handheld projectile launcher
A slingshot is a Y-shaped device with an elastic band stretched between the prongs, used to launch small projectiles like stones.
Children's toy and occasional hunting tool.
In American English, slingshot also describes the maneuver of using a planet's gravity to accelerate a spacecraft: The probe used Jupiter for a slingshot toward Saturn.
As a verb, to slingshot is to accelerate rapidly, often by releasing stored energy: The car slingshoted past the competition.
