infield

Pitcher's mound territory

The infield is the area of a baseball diamond enclosed by the four bases, as opposed to the outfield beyond.

By extension, infield refers to the players stationed there—first baseman, second baseman, shortstop, and third baseman: The team has a solid infield this year.

In track and field, the infield is the grassy area inside the oval.
