backstretch
Track's distant side
The backstretch is the straight section of a racetrack opposite the homestretch—the part farthest from the grandstand and finish line.
By extension, backstretch refers to the stable area where horses are housed and workers live: He grew up on the backstretch, mucking stalls before school.
The term also describes the later middle portion of any extended effort: We're on the backstretch of this project.
