elision
Contraction's silent sacrifice
Elision is the omission of a sound or syllable in speech or writing.
In pronunciation, it's the dropping of sounds for smoother flow: "prob'ly" for probably, "don't" for do not.
In writing, an apostrophe often marks the omission.
More broadly, elision is any act of leaving something out or glossing over it: His account involved some strategic elisions.
