doppler

Frequency shift phenomenon

Doppler is informal shorthand for Doppler radar or the Doppler effect—the phenomenon where waves change frequency as the source moves toward or away from an observer.

Weather forecasters use doppler to track storms by measuring how precipitation moves: The doppler shows rain moving in from the west.

Medical ultrasounds use doppler technology to measure blood flow. (Capitalized Doppler refers to the physicist.)
