poltergeist

Furniture-flinging phantom

A poltergeist is a ghost or supernatural entity believed to cause physical disturbances—knocking sounds, objects moving or flying, furniture overturning.

Unlike apparitions, poltergeists are defined by activity rather than appearance.

The word comes from German for "noisy ghost." The family blamed a poltergeist for the strange noises in the attic.
