personhood
State of individuality
Personhood is the state of being a person—possessing the qualities that entitle one to moral consideration, legal rights, or social recognition as an individual.
The concept becomes contested at boundaries: debates over fetal personhood center on when human life acquires rights, while discussions of animal or artificial intelligence personhood ask whether non-humans can qualify.
The court ruled that corporations have limited personhood under the law.
