good

Better than adequate

Good vs. bad: in frequency of use, good wins by a ratio of about four to one.

With myriad meanings, good is a catchall adjective.

Beyond the core favorable or beneficial meaning (good news, a good investment), we use good to characterize things that we like and enjoy (good food, good books), things that are valid (a good excuse, a good driver’s license) and things that are usable (see if that milk is still good).

When followed by a preposition, good takes on nuances: she’s good at tennis, he’s good about keeping promises, aspirin is good for a fever.
