social movements

Organized pushes for change

Social movements are collective efforts by groups of people to bring about or resist social, political, or cultural change.

They typically operate outside formal institutions, organizing around shared grievances or goals: the civil rights movement, the labor movement, the women's movement.

A movement may be loosely coordinated or highly organized, lasting years or decades.

The term can describe both the participants and their cause: She devoted her life to the movement.
